NLC’s Stand: Minister’s Exclusion Demanded in Fuel Subsidy Review

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong ultimatum, stating that they will not attend their planned meeting with the Federal Government today if the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, is present.

This meeting was organized to allow labor unions and the government to jointly assess the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding they had previously agreed upon regarding subsidy removal relief.

Leading up to this meeting, organized labor expressed significant concerns about the severe impact of the foreign exchange crisis on the national economy and urged the urgent stabilization of the Nigerian currency.

Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, released a statement on Sunday, pointing out that government officials were responsible for the sharp depreciation of the currency. In a statement titled “Immediate Measures to Stabilize the Naira Amidst Alarming Depreciation,” Ajaero stressed that the consequences of the currency’s decline would be felt by both workers and the general public.

Ajaero stated, “If our meeting with the federal government proceeds as planned, it will be conducted without the participation of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong. We will not participate in any discussions with the federal government if the Minister of Labour and Employment is present. We had previously made a decision following the dispute with the National Union of Road Transport Workers that all parties, including the police, should vacate the premises until the matter was resolved. Unfortunately, this was not adhered to. Therefore, any future meeting with the federal government will exclude the Minister of Labour and Employment.
