Good News: Twitter Begins Paying Nigerian Creators 2023

Several Nigerian content creators have received payments from X, a microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. These payments are a result of X’s ad-revenue sharing program aimed at supporting creators.

According to reports, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, initiated payments in July for eligible US Blue subscribers (now known as X Premium), following his announcement of this program in February.

Multiple verified Nigerian users have confirmed receiving notifications regarding these payments. One user even stated their anticipated receipt of an amount exceeding N430,000. These payments are calculated based on advertisements displayed alongside responses to eligible users’ content.

Payment Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify, users must be subscribed to Twitter Blue and have accrued over five million tweet impressions per month consistently for the past three months. Additionally, users are required to have a Stripe payment account, as specified by Twitter.

This initiative serves as an incentive for creators who generate popular content that attracts advertisements, subsequently rewarding accounts that contribute to Twitter’s revenue generation. This effectively means that creators can earn a share of the ad revenue, starting with responses to their posts.

Twitter’s content monetization standards explicitly exclude sexual content from eligibility for monetization. Moreover, creators are explicitly prohibited from monetizing copyrighted content they don’t own, as well as content related to “pyramid schemes or get-rich-quick schemes” (particularly targeting crypto spammers), violence, criminal behavior, gambling, or substances such as drugs and alcohol. Any attempt to monetize such content is a breach of these guidelines.
